Life Lately

I want to get back to happy things.. hold on to your hats, I have some catching up to do.
The above photo was taken after a last minute shopping trip with daddy,
they were getting my mothers day gifts.
aww....
a giant pop-up, musical card... it plays "You are my Sunshine".... perfect....
I also got, willow tree figurines, jewelry, hanging baskets, and a sign for my wall....
I saw this on another blog a long time ago and Tom remembered that I liked it when he saw it in Target.

I love Target... and I love Tom.

And it really does help me relax.
It was a print that was on the subway walls in London during world war two.
When things get chaotic (as they have a tendency to do) I remember that no one is dropping bombs on me
so it is a good day.

Its funny... its serious... its a good reminder to stop whining, put down the chocolate and carry on.

Anyway.....
Here is the hottest guy ever best daddy ever helping them plant some of the flowers that Nana "helped" them buy me.
she drove, she paid... but Bella picked.
I'm pretty sure they just wanted a reason to use the watering can's she got them for Easter.
I have no reason to show you this... I have No idea what she is doing... but it makes me giggle.
I think she thinks she is being feminine.
What? what's so funny?

Then there was worship practice, Tom doesn't usually do it so it was a treat for the kids
and me... I love when he plays guitar.
Tommy really was happy most of the time.
and Daniel spent time practicing climbing stairs....
this was about as far as he got, but he entertained himself for a long time.

And last but not least Isabella had the honor of being a flower girl this weekend.
This was the rehearsal.
Her Aunt Kristin was the maid of honor.
Aren't they gorgeous!?

Ok, more wedding pics later... gotta get ready for the big anniversary weekend!
Five years of wedded bliss on Friday!

Cancer.

I want this blog to be about happy things, mostly the kids and our life together.
I want to talk to other people about what's important to me.
I want to share God's love...
I know that sounds corny but there is just too much love here for just the five of us.
But the time has come to write about an ugly and scary side of our lives these last few weeks.

My Mom had to have a radical hysterectomy yesterday,
She has uterine cancer.
Ominous sounding isn't it?
When I get bad news... really bad news, I get dizzy and my vision gets fuzzy.
That's how I felt when they told me.

If it was "contained" she had a 95% chance of survival.
If it had spread she had a 25% chance.
We had to wait two weeks not knowing,
and then the three hours spent in the waiting room were some of the longest of my life.

But though it all God is good
One week to the day after she was diagnosed I ran into a friends mom,
she had been in chemo the last time I saw her.... very sick... not at all the vibrant woman I had known
now against all odds she is cancer free.

God whispered that he knew my fears...

A few day's later I ran into the pastor from the church where my dad got saved back in October.
Dad's salvation led to both him and my mom getting baptized, something she had simply never done
though she'd been a Christian for many years.

God reminded me that she was His child....

The day before her surgery I saw another woman, someone my husband used to work for.
She too had cancer ,in more than one area, many surgeries, many chemotherapy rounds, and many close calls.
She too is alive and cancer free today.

God put my mom's diagnosis into perspective....

There are so many other ways that God had prepared me for this, and many ways He helped me through it.

Praise God it went wonderfully and the doctors believe the surgery was "curative"
They may do radiation just to be sure she won't have a recurrence.
But we are just thanking God they caught it very early,
they think its gone for good,
and we get to keep our Mama and Nana for a lot LOT longer.

But the older I get the more I'm seeing that nothing is permanent.
Nothing is ever guaranteed beyond this very moment.

My parents,  the ones who have always been there

My little sister and best friend,

My husband, my truly better half.... more like three quarters...
there is way more of him in my heart and soul than there is of me anymore.

My precious, adorable babies who give meaning to every little mundane thing that I do.

All of them are not mine to keep.
God has given them to me for now,
they are his extravagant gift to me.
And someday we will be separated... not maybe... we will be.
Either they will die or I will.
Maybe not for many years... maybe in just a few days.... only God knows.

Does this scare me? Does it hurt? Does it make me lose faith?
Yes it scares me, most everyone is scared of pain.
Yes it hurts, how do you picture life without someone you love?

But faith? I think it gives me a greater faith.
God only asks us to choose Him... to choose to love Him.
He loved us enough to die for us, in our place.

In our place.
So there is death on earth, but because of God's love, if you accept the sacrifice he made.
then there is a new life for you.

I don't see it as a very hard choice to make. I don't want to die, God doesn't want me to die.
But he does want it to be my choice, and I love that about Him.
He knew love couldn't be a reflex, if it were it would matter about as much as blinking.
Do you ever think about blinking?
See my point?

Love is beautiful because we know that the other side of love is ugly.
Hatred is destructive.
Hating others, hating yourself, hating God.
God wants beauty for out lives.
But he knew there would be no value in love without giving us a choice.

This world is like that waiting room in the hospital, we aren't really living here, this is not all there is.
Choose Him....He's already chosen you.

Please Pass the Peas

Daniel does not like peas...
I'm not sure he will forgive me for making him eat half the jar.
Or for posting this picture... he isn't smiling by the way,
He gagged the whole time, but he kept eating... such a trooper.
oh the horror....
It was like a marathon for him, he seemed exhausted when it was all over,
like the Chinese guy who ate the most hot dogs ever....
look at those sad eyes.... this kid has been scarred for life...
He may never smile again!
He will spend the rest of his days wondering why his mother hated him...
"why did she torture me so?" He will ask his therapist....
What can I do to regain his love???

hmm..... you are my sunshine...my only sunshine.... you make me haaaapppyyyy.....
That's Better.
I'm forgiven... until next time.

Rated E for everyone.

Tom spends a lot of time working in our yard and I need to find ways to amuse myself....
that don't involve cooking, cleaning, or caring for my darling offspring....
So when I get bored or generally overwhelmed by life I take pictures.
It helps me to remember that this seemingly ordinary day full of housework, diaper changes, and time outs isn't forever...
when the kids are grown and gone it will be these pictures that I'm taking today
that will be a window into the foundation of the beautiful life we are building here.

Also I like to harass my man.
But that's just a bonus... mostly I'm preserving the memories and blah blah blah..... anyway....

I said "honey... blow me a kiss!"
This is what I get...
first I'm ignored..
Then.... "no... your taking a video.... aren't you?"
 "No! just a picture.....Please???"
"Your going to blog about this aren't you?"
"....no.... well..... now I might...."
"Don't post pictures of me with my shirt off......"
"I didn't ask you to take your clothes off....I just wanted a kiss...
what kind of blog do you think I'm doing!?"
That look means he is both exasperated and amused, and that I should probably quit while I'm ahead :)

*Tom will say that this is not at all how the conversation went....
he's right... this was the condensed version
but kids kept interrupting....
Just like they are doing now... so I don't have time to explain it all...
But he never did give me that kiss
and he did say not to show the world his naked chest...
Sorry if you were waiting for that.

Mother's Day for Me.

I'm a stay at home mother of three
I don't have a boss, no one says "great job today".
No one gives me a raise... or a paycheck at all for that matter.
I don't get to call in sick on a random day just to relax.
In fact even when I am sick I have to be physically incapable of caring for the children before Tom will stay home.

So Mother's Day to me is all those things rolled into one day.
I know on this day at the very least I get the "good job"...
I probably get to relax a little more than normal...
There is still no paycheck but there will usually be a gift.
(the one time there was not a gift???... a more expensive gift than I would ever have expected showed up a week later... I think he was scared.)

So obviously I really look forward to this day.
And I feel like what I write today should do it justice.

Should I write something flowery and beautiful about the importance of motherhood?

Should I write about the uniqueness of the calling mothers have?

Should I write about the indescribable heartache's?

The mind numbing joy in just hearing them say "I wuv ooo mama" the first time?

The exhaustion you have after caring for others all day every day?

The fear that you are failing, that you are not enough?

The sensation that your heart will burst from pride when your child accomplishes the littlest things?

I thought I would look up the history of the holiday for some inspiration.

The following is from Wikipedia,
The holiday was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 as a day to honor one's mother.
Jarvis wanted to accomplish her mother's dream of making a celebration for all mothers.
She kept promoting the holiday until President Woodrow Wilson made it an official national holiday in 1914.

Nine years after the first official Mother's Day, commercialization of the U.S. holiday became so rampant that Anna Jarvis herself became a major opponent of what the holiday had become and spent all her inheritance and the rest of her life fighting what she saw as an abuse of the celebration.

Commercial and other exploitations of the use of Mother's Day infuriated Anna
and she made her criticisms explicitly known throughout her time.
She criticized the practice of purchasing greeting cards, which she saw as a sign of being too lazy to write a personal letter. She was arrested in 1948 for disturbing the peace while protesting against the commercialization of Mother's Day,
and she finally said that she  "wished she would have never started the day because it became so out of control"

Anna Jarvis, considered it a "Hallmark Holiday", i.e. one with an overwhelming commercial purpose.
She died in 1948, regretting what had become of her holiday.
In the United States, Mother's Day remains one of the biggest days for sales of flowers, greeting cards, and the like; it is also the biggest holiday for long-distance telephone calls.

So that is what I got.
Not what I was expecting at all.
I was not at all inclined to write something beautiful about motherhood now.

My first reaction was that Anna Jarvis was probably just one of those people who needed a cause.
Anything to be passionate and loud about. And once she got her holiday.
She needed something else to do so she protested what her holiday had become.
The phrase "control freak" came to mind.

What kind of a person doesn't like to give gifts? And who would discourage gift giving?
I spent a few hours changing diapers and feeding kids wondering about this woman and her motivations.

She wanted a holiday for celebrating mother's,
she got it,
then she said we had missed the point.
So what was the point?

After lots of thought, I think its this.
One day of the year we celebrate our mother, with a card, another piece of jewelry, some flowers.
these are nice.. but think of how they look compared to the things that she gave us.
The time she gave us.
The better part of her life, and the strongest part of her heart.

The one who fed us and cared for us when we were too little to even lift our head.

The one who slept on the floor beside our bed when we had a high fever and awful nightmares.

The one who listened to us cry about all our adolescent drama,

and acted as though our silly fleeting problems were as important to her as they seemed to us.

The one who held our had in the emergency room, and yelled at the mean nurse when we were to sick to stand up for ourselves.

The one who beamed with pride on graduation day.

The ones who sat front and center on our wedding day,
showing amazing grace as they gave away they're babies.

The ones who sat in a waiting room for twelve hours for just a few minutes with they're babies new baby.

Our mom,
this is who we will call in the middle of the night when the baby has been crying for hours.

Our mom is the person in the delivery room behind our husband, praying us through every pain

Our mom is the only person we can give our kids too for the day so we can go relax
and never worry about how they are.... they are probably eating ice cream and very happy.

Our moms are our heritage....

they are the ones who pass on the past to the future, they take the pictures, make the scrapbooks, save the art projects.... preserving these things so that when we are all grown up we can look back and remember how much we were loved....

And so they can look back and remember chubby cheeks, pigtails,
and maple syrup kisses on lazy Saturdays.

Maybe Anna Jarvis was crazy, but I think her heart was in the right place.
She didn't envision a day where we spend money to show mom what she means to us.
Although the gifts are nice, that was never the point... why not just give her a gift on her birthday...
The point is to take this one day and try to do for her a little tiny bit of what she has done for you.
Spend the day taking care of her, doing her job.
On Mother's Day we should be "Mothering" our moms.

Happy Mothering Day :)

Fat Friday

Lost again this week!

My Stats:
Starting weight: 265.6
Lost this week: -2.0 pounds
Lost so far: -36.4
Current weight: 229.2

One more pound and I'm back to my lowest weight... i was 228 even on January 14th.
Its frustrating that I was stuck (mentally and physically) for so long.
But I'm happy to be back where I was.

And when I get to 225 I'll get my 7th "Five Pound Star"!!!
And I'll have lost more than forty pounds.

Its not easy but its worth it.
